I will be in San Francisco for 1 night and a day. Any suggestions for great deal hotels?
Also, I'd love for it to be in a lively area, because I plan on exploring the next day.

Elisabeth Jones: I'd like a hotel, however I'm open to whatever. I'm staying there with my boyfriend, so I guess we would just need a place that is our own bedroom, safe, and clean. :)4 months ago

Tom Howard: Our favorite hotel in SF is Hotel Carlton: http://www.jdvhotels.com/carlton/?cid=gl_car . It's a beautiful place, with comfortable rooms and terrifically friendly, fun staff. It's 5 mins walk to Union Square and 10 mins to Powell St BART Station, and a pleasant walk to the restaurants and bars in Polk St. We've been 3 times now and loved it every time.
Looks like you can get rooms for as low as USD $88 from getaroom.com, hotels.com or expedia.
Another place we stayed at more recently is the King George in Mason St. The rooms were smaller and it didn't have the atmosphere of Carlton, but it was affordable and still very pleasant. A bit closer to Union Square and the BART, and accordingly a bit further away from Polk.4 months ago

Alexandra Danieli: You should definitely ride a cable car!
Here's an overview guide, with events and weather:

Maybe there'll be some music in town that you'll like to see :)
Have fun!

Chris: If you are staying centrally you should just explore the Embarcadero Center (http://www.embarcaderocenter.com/ec/) on Market Street for breakfast, then jump on a cable car down to Fisherman's Wharf. While you are there you can take the ferry to Alcatraz (the prison). You must do this. I would recommend booking the Alcatraz ferry before you leave otherwise you might miss out on the day. At Fisherman's Wharf there is a great bakery/restaurant called the Boudin Bakery (http://www.boudinbakery.com/), it's a great place for lunch or dinner overlooking Alcatraz. If you have time you can take a bus around to see the Golden Gate, but it's just a bridge.4 months ago

christina tunnah: I'm a fan of Napa Outlet Mall. There's one in Gilroy in the south of SF, but Napa offers the opportunity to combine the effort with exploring Napa wineries and restaurants. Second Dave are Vacaville; lots of stores & good if doing a road trip towards Tahoe or up Highway 5. Look them up online to see the number & types of stores to choose best fit.5 months ago - 1 person liked this answer

Roy Britten: Gilroy is large and popular, and the smaller Monterey mall is worth a trip as you can fit in a visit to the excellent Aquarium at the same time.4 months ago

Fenn B: In my opinion, Hotel Carlton is one of the best hotels I've seen anywhere - It's super funky (and cheap)!
http://www.jdvhotels.com/hotels/sanfrancisco/carlton
The staff are some of the best I've seen and they have free local wine tastings on friday evenings (at least when I was there).
Very cool.

Scenic lookouts in San Fran?
Where are the best scenic lookouts in San Francisco? I'd really like a bird's eye view from somewhere in the city. Any ideas?
-
Ian C: I just went to Coit Tower, it's a short walk from Fisherman's Wharf or the North Beach area. It's a bit of a hike to the top, but well worth it, especially on a summer's day! Got some great pics of the city and bay.
It costs $6 to ride the elevator to the top. Thanks for the tip!9 months ago -
Alexandra Danieli: If you were thinking indoors, then the Starlight Room at Union Square has nice views, the Restaurant on top of the Hilton close to Union Square, and the Carnelian Room, in the Bank of America building.
Also, there are some skyscrapers in the Financial District that allow rooftop access and the views can be pretty amazing.
Also views from the hills of Pacific Heights can be pretty stunning!9 months ago

What's a good boutique in SF for men's fashion?
The warehouses only have boring stuff!
-
Alexandra Danieli: More Tshirts and Jeans, but also some cool shirts, not too stiff and not too gay. Hard to find - -
Let me know if you see anything!9 months ago -
Ian C: Try D-Structure t-shirts on Haight St for cool unique t-shirts. I always go here when I come to SF.

What happens in San Francisco on 4th of July?
Anywhere/anything specific I should know about?
-
Kathy Drasky: Nothing happens in SF on 4th of July. Well, there are fireworks at the Wharf, and one of the best places to "see" them and not get caught up in a crowd is from the top of Nob Hill, at Mason and Sacramento, about 9 pm. The city is usually fogged in, so what you see are some cool green and red blurs -- always enhanced by a stop on Haight St. earlier in the day ; - )
Lots of locals leave the city for warmer places over the 3- or 4-day weekend. But that's good news because you can get into just about any restaurant. Bars with outdoor areas might be doing FREE BBQs with discounted drinks. All the shops, clubs, cafes, etc. are OPEN. Union Square and the Wharf will be hyper-touristy, but other places like Golden Gate Park and the Mission will be chill. It's one of my favorite times to not leave the city -- and I've lived here for 18 years!10 months ago - 1 person liked this answer -

Kathy Drasky: Hippie vibe alive and well in the Haight (Haight & Ashbury). Check the telephone poles for flyers of bands playing in the area or pick up a FREE SF Bay Guardian weekly paper. The Independent at 628 Divisadero St. (near the Haight) has a range of bands Tues thru Sundays. Tix usually about $15 - $18. Also, Amoeba Music at the end of Haight St. near Golden Gate Park. Sometimes has FREE concerts -- but most of all check out the huge stock of used CDs & vinyl.10 months ago

Ian C: Just up from the corner of Broadway and Columbus you'll find a few places with good pizza. I prefer new york style, and this place here (google map link) is my favorite place in the area.

Brian Searl: Alcatraz.. I consider that a must see unless of course you have a record and don't really like being back in a prison :)
Other popular things are taking a tour of the city on a segway.. and these:
The Urban Safari
Golden Gate Bridge
USS Pampanito
Ferry Building Marketplace
Press Club
Lombard Street
Hope this helps!10 months ago -
Anna Chaffey: Def see Alcatraz! But BOOK Early!!!! The tours sell out fast and I would suggest even booking your ferry ticket before you arrive.
If you stay at Fisherman's Wharf you will have access to the best parts. Hang out at Pier 39 (visit the local sea lions who moved in after the '89 earthquakes and refuse to leave) and take a stroll along the Embacadero there are plenty of shops to ckeck out.
Heasd back towards Fisherman's wharf area to check out the local seafood (they are well known for clam chowder and "Chippino").
If you're a chocolate fan check out Ghiradelli Square, or the Boudin bakery for fans of sour dough.
To see most of San Fran in a day I highly suggest hiring a "go car". check out www.gocartours.com for details. They are 1-2 person gps guided cars that will take you everywhere you want to go, the best part, you are your own tour guide (with the help of the gps lady, who also gives a history of the areas you are driving through) so you get to stop off wherever you like and spend as much time at each attraction as you please.
Other sights I can reccommend not previously listed
Bay bridge and Haight Ashbury .

Marcus: Absolutely everything that Anna said plus you have to take a ride on the cable cars!
China town is pretty cool.
Golden Gate is incredible.
But pretty much everything down by Fishermans Wharf / Pier 39 as Anna said is very cool.10 months ago
