Things for 11-15 year-olds to do in Bali?

How do I keep my 11 year old girl and 15 year old boy busy whilst in Nusa Dua and Ubad in Bali?

    • Simon Monk
Simon Monk: Hire a canoe on the coast and go snorkelling ... some great spots over in the East at Padambai.

In Ubud head over to the Sayan valley: despite all the posh hotels there are some trails that drop down to the river where the local kids go swimming after school and where the rafting companies take tourists down.

Tresna: In Ubud there's plenty of courses that are suitable (some specifically for kids) like cooking, batik, jewelry making, painting, kite making and dancing. There's also activities such as rice field walks, bike riding tours (mostly downhill) and white water rafting.

There's the monkey forest, Ubud market, Bali bird park and temples to visit and in the evening loads of dances and shadow puppet performances to choose from. In Ubud, you will be spoiled for activities.

Visit the Information centre opposite the Ubud market to pick up some brochures and also ask at your hotel or guest house if they can suggest some activities. The Pondok Library (behind the soccer field) offers activities and also has lots of posters and brochures on their notice boards.

Simon Monk: Mmm, yes ... but it's definitely worth the effort to get to Sumbawa, Flores and Sumba and we had some wonderful adventures in those islands, but probably not with a two year old!

Remarkably you can still get off the beaten track even in Bali: we hired a motorbike on our last trip there and were astonished that you only had to go one valley across from Ubud and almost all the tourists disappeared. Delightful. An option we did a couple of years ago with a 1 year old and a 3 year old in tow was to hire a taxi and spend a day following the base of the volcano from Ubud across to the East coast - wonderful scenery. If we were doing it again I'd now stay on the east coast too for a few days, probably at Padambai.

Lombok is also easy and accessilble and fun with a 2 year old. Same deal: hire a taxi for the day to take you around and inland.

Best place to sray in Bali with a 2 year old?

We are going to Bali in October and want to have some time together as a couple during our stay. Any ideas as most 'kids clubs' seem to cater for over 4s? We also have a 9 year old son.

kelly Douglas: What do you plan on doing in Bali? I usually stay in kuta however I probablbly wouldn't recommend staying there with a small child as it get get pretty wild there. It's quite a young party crowd and not the cleanest spot. I would suggest staying Nusa dua, Sanur or jimbaran bay. These are very clean and good spots for families.

Simon Monk: We have stayed at Alam Shanti in Ubud for some years, as the place and people are simply wonderful and as parents you get to enjoy a little luxury too; Never used them for baby sitting although I'm sure they could arrange it.

Before that we stayed at Murni's also in Ubud and they did arrange some staff to look after our 1 and 3 year old.

Both are very family run places rather than kid's clubs. Trust me: it gets easier in the next year or two!

      Have fun

She's available all day fand evening for less than the cost of one hour of nannying back home and does a great job. Contact her at wsuci {at}hotmail.com and tell her Alan Jones sent you.

Jane Sutherland: Wow, thanks for your answers. This site is fantastic - wish I discovered it sooner! Yes we have just returned from 2 weeks in Bali visiting Ubud, Lombok and Gili Islands. We stayed at Alam Shanti (and Alam Gili) and loved it. Organised a babysitter in Ubud to go out to dinner for Rp 50000/hour. She was great and the kids loved her. We are returning to Bali in October and although we loved staying in the beautiful Alam Shanti, we are considering the bigger hotels because we would love more time together as a couple (e.g. maybe some time in the hotel room without the kids!). We are concerned that we will hate the bigger hotels in Kuta (esp when I read about families feeding their kids McDonalds while in Bali!) but the kids facilities are very tempting! We like cultural experiences but also like to return home feeling like we have had time together as a couple not only as a family. Selfish?

Save traveling to Bali with a 2 year old baby. Any Island around with the same level of health security?

I´m traveling with my son that will be 18 months at the time of travel. We have already travel alot, but around Europe, but I believe Bali is a good destination to start with the marvellous south east Asia. Do you agree?Any Island close by with similar health standards.
    Than you so much

Simon Monk: we have travelled to both bali and indonesia with our two since they were very young and have never had any real problems. i'm told by the expats there that standard medical issues are ok locally but they'd head to singapore if it were anything serious - that's an hour by plane.

kelly Douglas: I've been to Bali a couple of times and i have never been sick nor have i known children to become sick from travelling. I would advise to only drink bottled water and try to avoid drinks with ice unless you are at a proper restaurant.
Other than that its perfectly fine! take a bottle of liquid non soap hand sanitizer and it works a treat when dining out and for day trips..especially for the little ones!

Jane Sutherland: We have just returned from Bali with a 2 and 9 year old. Both my partner and I got upset tummys but the kids were fine! We went off the beaten track to Ubud, Lombok and Gili Islands and the Balinese people loved the kids. It would have been nice to stay somewhere with a 'kids club' so my partner and I could have had some more time together, but the hotel and restaurant staff everywhere we went were more then eager to look after our 2 year old while we ate! We organised babysitters through the hotels and they were always lovely women who the kids felt totally comfortable with straight away (as they did with most Balinese people we met) and cost was only Rp25000-Rp50000/hour or AUS$2.50-AUS$5.00/hour - very cheap! Our 2 year old puts everything in his mouth and I forgot to use the hand sanitiser, although we regularly used his baby wipes to wipe his hands and high chair (if there was one avail) and he was fine. We used bottled water always (and brushed our teeth with it too) but I think my partner and I were a bit too adventurous with the food! We had gastrolyte so we were soon okay again. The kids ate nasi goreng everywhere we went (vege rice and egg). Got both kids Typhoid and Hep A injections before we went. We went to the monkey forest but didn't take any food or plastic bags/bottles that might cause them to jump on or attack us - instead we watched other people have it done to them!!! Apparently rabies is a concern at the moment and I didn't want to have to worry. We got a hotel transfer straight from the airport and put the 2 year old on our lap with seatbelt around us. Much easier then trying to organise taxi etc especially when you are tired. One bit of advice - when you arrive to collect your luggage porters come and ask if you would like a trolley - my partner said yes and after they gave us a trolley and lifted 2 bags asked for Rp200000 - AUS$20. We were conned! Have a great trip and enjoy the lovely Balinese way with kids - I hope to be more like them with my kids from now on!!!

kelly Douglas: Both times I've flown to Bali I have flown with Garuda INdonesiai found them to be reliable, friendly, comfortable and affordable. It also adds to the experience- flying with the countries airline!
You can book with jetstar however I find you can only get a real cheap rate if you book within the dates specified. Booking when there isn't a sale usually ends up the same once you add tax food and drinks etc
Garuda do a 11pm flight back to Australia which enables you to enjoy your last day!

Best place to stay for spa resort facilities on the beach. Spa, steam room and a 'balinese' style preferred. Thanks!

Hi, I'm looking to go to Bali. I am not interested in large hotels or family-style accommodation. Looking for something where you can sip coctails on the beach, enjoy spa treatments, steam room etc etc. Thanks.

kelly Douglas: the best place is Jimbaran Bay, Sanur or Nusa Dua..gorgeous clean beaches, white sand...with 5 star resorts with spa facilities..Nusa Dua and Jimbaran Bay are great for water sports as well. These spots can be a little more expensive but with the current exchange rate it still works out to a minimal amount not to mention its worth it!

I think some of the resorts feature a 'club med' sort of sytle where EVERYTHING is included in the upfront price of the hotel booking.

Enjoy! Bali is one of my favourite holiday destinations!!

Nusa Dua also has good markets to stroll through during the day

You will love it there the people are so nice...

Simon Monk: Hire a motorbike and explore all the villages around and around Ubud. It's a great central location. Just explore at random most of the time, and SOME of the time, with a little luck, you'll come across some local ceremony or other - and if you do, it is DEFINITELY worth stopping and watching.

More specifically, head out to Gunung Kawi, an old Indian temple at the bottom of lots of steps. Great rice terraces to view on the walk down.

Another excellent but long day trip (?) is to head out East, through Klungkung and then take the road that skirts the base of the volcano through Selat over to Tirta Gangga - superb scenery.

Oh, and if you are in Ubud on a FRIDAY night there is only one Kecak dance worth seeing and that is at the Pura Delem temple on the road between Ubud and Campuan: they are a professional troupe and their chanting, dance and fire trance dance is simply miles better than anywhere else.

      Enjoy.

What are some good budget hotel/guest house options in the Kuta/Legian area of Bali

I am looking for a hotel/guest house that is in the budget range (less than $30Aus) that is clean and close to the beach and shopping areas of Kuta/Legian.

Rachel Christian: We stayed at the Oasis in Kuta and i would NOT recommended staying there. The loo leaked, mozzies all through the room, the shutter doors didn't close and it just got worse and worse. I would stay away from that hotel. Depending on your age i have heard that the Bounty is a great place for young people. A firend from work is staying there in September and it is around $30.40 per night.
