Any particularly good hostels in the city that anyone knows of? Have already heard of Peking International, but it's booked up! :(

I never stayed in it, but I have heard good things about Wangfujing Youth Hostel (behind the Taiwan Hotel). Its not the cheapest place but its very central, has free internet and a great bar. From what I have heard this hostel is worth the extra. about 8 years ago

Is the train system easily understandable? Are there things to particularly look out for?

In general the train system is easy to understand and well organized, but it is true - depending on where you are it can be really hard to buy tickets without knowing Mandarin as the sales people at the stations don't know any English. But usually you find travel agents who will help you out. You pay a bit extra for this service, but it's worth it ;-) Moreover you have to know that you can't buy tickets in China as you know it from other countries - means you can only buy tickets to depart the city where you are. So when you are in Beijing for example you can buy tickets to every destination departing from Beijing. But you can't buy a ticket from Shanghai to Hong Kong when you are in Beijing. So I recommend: Whenever you reach a destination first thing you should do is buy a ticket to leave the city again, because it happens that trains are booked out about 8 years ago

Does anyone know of any music festivals in Germany in July?

There are several good festivals around Germany in July - for all events you can check out : http://www.festivalhopper.de/festivals-2009.php Around Cologne there are 2 bigger festivals on the first weekend of July - in Cologne the SUMMERJAM (3rd-5th of July) with reggea/ska music. Tickets are around 80 Euro and include the costs for the campsite. For the lineup and further information check out: http://www.summerjam.de On the 4th of July there is one day event in Bonn in the Rheinauen Parc called RhEINKULTUR. They are having 5 different stages and the music is mixed - rock, hiphop, etc. The good thing about this festival is that it's for free! Has anyone been to the great wall of china?

While I lived in Beijing I went to the Great Wall several times and to three different spots. The most common, because best restored and therefore really touristy part is Badaling. It is easy to get there from Beijing, because a lot of agencies are offering day trips, but i wouldn't recommend that part. Better, because less touristy, is Mutianyu. But from my point of view the best part is Simatai - not restored at all, beautiful landscape and not many tourists at all! we just hired a taxi driver for a day, which was 400 RMB and he went there with us and waited on the parking space until we finished hiking on the Great Wall. That was perfect and it's a nice day trip from Beijing! For some more information check out this website: http://www.travelchinaguide.com/china_great_wall/scene/beijing/simatai.htm Hope it helps! over 8 years ago

Interesting places to visit in southern France

I went to Marseille in September 2008 - it is a big city, but nevertheless worth visiting! Especially the harbor (Vieux Port) and Notre-Dame de la Garde on top of the hill - a beautiful church and the view over the city is spectacular! Further you should catch the boat and go to Iles du Frioul. We did some day trips as well and went to Aix-en-Provence and Cassis. Aix-en-Provence, known because it is the city of birth of Cézanne, is a laid-back student city with an interesting history, some beautiful sights, narrow, old streets and small cafés. The small port city Cassis is situated about 20 km east of Marseille. The city, surrounded by the highest cliff line of France and the "Calanques", has the charm of a fishing village and is definitely worth checking out! over 8 years ago

Things to do in the summer? is Croatia a good place to vist value wise and stuff to do like swimming?

I would also say that Croatia is cheaper than Italy and Greece. I have been to Istria in September 2007, which is considered to be off-season. and we really enjoyed ourselves going out for dinner, drinking wine and partying. Unfortunately up in the north of Croatia doesn't have sandy beaches - it's all stones and rocks. But beautiful clear water, great for swimming and snorkeling. But you should bring bathing shoes as there are heaps of sea urchins - so be careful! Worth visiting in the Istria region is Pula - an ancient, roman city with an amphitheater. over 8 years ago
