How much spending money needed for Japan?

Dave your info seems to be in order. I live in Japan and you'll need to spend around 10,000 yen per day if you stay in Tokyo. Rather than going to Ramen shops though (which are nice) i'd suggest going to an Izakaya where you'll spend a little more money (perhaps 2-3000 yen per person) but the range of food is well worth it. Plus if they may have "Nomihoudai" (all you can drink) or "Tabehoudai" (all you can eat) available which will save you a heap of money, but alas, you have to ask if they have it. The JR travel pass is a must, it will save you literally thousands of dollars as JR accounts for about 80% of all the rail roads in Japan. Plus Japanese trains are remarkably efficient (you can set your watch to the train schedule) and go everywhere so you won't need to worry about renting a car unless you are going to extremely distant locations. Anyways enjoy your time here, Lucas. about 7 years ago

    Must visit place / town?

I strongly recommend Hokkaido - one of the most beautiful parts of Japan. It's kinda like tasmania, but with snow. I've lived in Japan for 6 years and i make a point of going to Sapporo, Hakodate and Otaru and other places every year. The food is great - the best sushi, crab and other seafood in japan i reckon. The sights are fantastic - in summer they have a flower festival in Furano and in Winter they have the snow festival in Sapporo (just google Sapporo Snow Festival to see some highlights). It's well worth the extra flight to get there. I also recommend Hiroshima as it is one of the friendliest cities in Japan (in my experience) - The a-dome is serene and beautiful, and Miyajima is amazing too - it's a shrine/gateway in the water. Anyways please have fun whilst you're here! almost 8 years ago

I want to spend a day in Yokohama. What are the top three things to do there?

I'd recommend going to minato mirai / sakuragicho (toyoko / JR yokohama line) to check out the big ferris wheel, as well as see yokohama bay and enjoy some excellent food and shopping (a bit pricey though). While your in that area if you take the toyoko line from minato mirai station you can get to Chinatown for some really good chinese food. Yokohama station itself has some excellent shopping and some more good restaurants. You can find some massive department stores in the station and nearby, such as Sogo department store, Yodobashi Camera, and a lot more. If you want to go out drinking i'd recommend Shin Yokohama (yokohama line) as it has some nice Jazz bars, but if clubbing is more your scene then Yokohama is the winner. Mizonokuchi (Den en toshi line / nambu line) it's technically kawasaki but it has some great izakayas. about 8 years ago
