I'm thinking to spen my Christmas Holiday in Lhasa, any suggestion?

Agree with Shambhala Palace, lovely rooftop restaurant and you can get a full view of the Potala Palace. But have you met the owner in person? I've been to Shambhala Palace many times (I do mean MANY), never met Laurence Brahm. over 5 years ago

Is altitude sickness always a problem in Tibet?

I haven't tried chewing garlic, but it would also be a good idea to take medication like diamox, which is a prescribed drug in some countries. Note that you will not be able to find diamox in China or Tibet, better ask your doctor for more advice. I found most people traveling in Tibet are actually okay with the altitude. Then why do people always scared of the altitude before coming to Tibet? Because those who suffered from serious complication of mountain sickness will make the noisiest news. over 5 years ago

Does an iPhone work in China to UK?

In China, if your iPhone can work with China Mobile or China Unicom, then you can use it in UK as well. There's a specially-made iPhone from China Telecom, you may not be able to use it in UK. But I guess you won't get one from China Telecom. over 5 years ago

What's the best way to get into Tibet? I heard you cannot enter unless you're signed up with a group "bus tour"?

The best season should be May, June, October, November, in my opinion. You will have to join a tour to come to Tibet, a tour guide and a permit is compulsory. over 5 years ago

Traveling to hong kong soon. I have a 3 g iPad. Also an android phone, and a portable 3 g router myfi. Does anyone know the telecom options?

The free wifi at McDonald's is usually limited to 20 minutes (Y5ZONE) and that's probably not enough if you rely on it as your sole connection. I would suggest you to get a local SIM card from CSL or PCCW, join a plan for around HK$ 200 per month for 5GB data. It should be pretty much enough if you use it for Whatsapp. If you have an Android phone, I would suggest you to buy a SIM for your Android only, then use it as a wifi hotspot instead of using myFi. And no ID card is required to buy a SIM card, pretty straightforward, it should be easy to spot a shop in town. Try to avoid Smartone, as their plan is only good for long-term users. over 5 years ago

Where should we go for 10 days if Tibet isn't open in early May when we plan to be there?

I think you may try Yunnan instead. Indeed my friend in Australia asked me the same question by email, so I just copy and paste the answer here: Dear J, If you are going to spend ten days in Yunnan, I would suggest you to go backpacking to Kunming first, then: Kunming - Dali Old Town - Heqin - back to Dali Old Town - Lijiang - Shuhe - then Tiger Leaping Gorge - Shangri-la (Zhongdian) - Diqin. From Diqin back to Lijiang and find your way out of Yunnan. If you have more time, try to add something from the south, but these places are much less touristy and transportation is less convenient than the north part of Yunnan. For example: from Lijiang, go to Heqin - Dali - Weishan - Nanjian - Jingdong - Puning (near Pu'er) - Simao (they changed the name to Puer City) - Jinghong, there are some other areas around Jinghong. I traveled in this area by bicycle with Oat in 2006, these are some of the places where I found very interesting small townish towns of southwestern China. But I don't know much about the travel facilities there, it may be difficult to go around without speaking or reading any Chinese. over 5 years ago
