What sights can you recommend to see in one weekend?

I'm fairly certain there are no free times for Thyssen. I would add the Palacio Real to your list of things to see (not necessarily inside, but definitely wandering around that area) about 9 years ago

How far is Atocha train station from Chamartin?

I'm not sure what is fastest but cercanias (local trains, part of renfe and not the metro) would be hard to beat and it should take less than 15 min on the train and they are pretty regular. So if you leave 25 mins as a minimum you should be fine (although you might want to leave some extra time for if you have trouble finding your way around one of the two). Timetable for this can be found at http://www.renfe.com/viajeros/cercanias/madrid/index.html (Origen=origen, Destino=destination, Fecha=date) about 8 years ago

What are some of the cool neighborhoods in Madrid with unique shops, cafes & bars?

Roughly, Malasaña has a bunch of nightlife, including mildly alternative shops and bars. Chueca has the gay scene so plenty of good gear in that style. Lavapies is properly alternative, plus large immigrant scene, with a bunch of good cafes and bars, plus fairly cheap. Also La Latina, just the other side (coming from town) of the metro has a number of good bars. One nice place for some lesser known bars is halfway between Malasaña and Callao, and just north of that there are also a bunch of unique shops in Malasaña around Plaza de San Idelfonso. over 7 years ago
