How are the Greek Islands in mid-October? Some say many services are closed, others say it's a perfect time to avoid huge crowds

We've been there September & October and it most places are pretty closed by mid-October, particularly on the less popular islands. My ideal time to visit would the the 6 weeks from September on. Perfect. over 4 years ago

    Autumn in japan

Having just done such a trip, I can offer some suggestions. Have a look at my photos on flickr for some ideas: www.flickr.com/photos/simonmonk/ My suggestions would be: - Kyoto (of course!) allow as much time as you can. It'll leave you speechless at that time of year. If you want any suggestions on temples, just ask but prepared for it to be crowded! - I always love the tiny island of Miyajima just south of Hiroshima. Get up early and go hiking. - go all the way south to Sakurajima for something different. It looks a long way but you'll be travelling by Shinkansen so that's nothing. - on the Japan sea side, try Kanazawa and find the ninja temple there plus the street of goldsmiths. So, if you've now had enough of temples and autumn leaves, head back to Tokyo for some plain weirdness. Crazy place but some think its cool. over 4 years ago

So I want to explore Japan.

See my other answers on Japan. But best advice to explore and save money is to buy a Japan Rail Pass which you have to do BEFORE you arrive. It'll save you thousands, literally. over 4 years ago

Cheapest way to go to Bhutan from Malaysia

I'm not sure you have much choice: Druk Air (fantastic country and worth every minute you can spend there) Top tip; go up into the mountain temples about 3pm as dusk arrives. They usually light candles as it gets ear and it's very atmospheric although most people have left by then. over 4 years ago

Ho hum .... More than one trip! I'd allow a week to ten days for your first time. Then leave, as our the memories and return later and explore more. over 4 years ago

What to do in New York as a solo traveller?

Have a look at http://peek.com/r83-new_york_new-/ Also, last time I was there there are some fun baseball cages to have a swing in on the West Side (you vs a machine) and there is the Noguchi museum which is quite a hike out if you're into art at all. over 4 years ago
