Where can I see some African wildlife?

There are lots of Game Reserves opening up in the Cape now so there is a good selection to choose from. One that I can recommend is the Garden Route Game Lodge (http://www.gardenroutegamelodge.com/). It is a 3 hour drive from Cape Town up the very beautiful Garden Route. We saw elephants, cheetah, rhino, lions and lots of other wildlife. The service and accommodation was outstanding - if you aren't going to go north (where the game reserves have maleria, etc), then this is a good option. Another option to consider which is only a 2 hour drive from Cape Town is Aquila Private Game Reserve near Worcester (http://www.aquilasafari.com/) almost 10 years ago

    Where are nice beaches?

If you have transport available (hire a car for a day from the airport), then I would strongly suggest you make the very scenic trip up to Palm Beach - home of the stars, the very northern most beach in Sydney. Palm Beach has 2 sides - one sheltered in the Pittwater inlet and the other facing the ocean. You can watch the seaplanes taking off and landing on Pittwater (or if you have the time and money, take a flight over Sydney) and catch some sun with the rich and famous set. It is a stunning place to visit, you won't regret it! almost 10 years ago

How safe is it for a single (male) backpacker to visit Jo'burg?

Personally, I'd take a lot more care around Johannesburg (particularly downtown) than you would at home but by all accounts they have been putting a lot of money into lowering crime in Johannesburg (even enlisting the aid of Rudolph Giuliani) before the 2010 World Cup. If you are going to Johannesburg, make sure to get out of the city and visit places like the Pilanesburg Game Reserve. Also, I'd recommend taking a tour to one of the townships (like Soweto) - but I wouldn't try to do that on your own, its better to rely on people that know and understand the area. over 9 years ago
