My amazingly gorgeous, smart, and lucky girlfriend won 2 tickets to London (from sydney)! That's right... (Unless i screw things up from here) I am gonna be going with her in about Aug 2010! Thing is we have both been to London and would prefer to check out other places. We are looking to get a cheap flight somehwere warm and not so much western europe (which she has done extensively). Ideas that have crossed our mind are Morocco and Spain... or Turkey... or (please help)...?

South of Spain and Morocco would get my vote: stunning areas by any measure. For more hidden gems, the Picos Europa range of mountains across the north of Spain are less visited and have some stunning cities to visit, all the way across to Galecia in the West.

... the only thing about August is that most of northern Europe descends on the South for August: not pretty. Probably the worst month to visit Europe (sorry).

Another combination we're looking at is Turkey and Syria as a pair. Both amazing and hospitable by all accounts. Heard great things about Syria in particular. almost 11 years ago

You could always try eastern Europe, the baltic coast is beautiful in August and you can get really cheap flights to Tallinn or Riga from London. If you can get over there the Curonian Spit in Lithuania is fantastic.

The exchange rate is great too since the Baltic states (Lativa, Estonia and Lithuania) haven't switched to the euro!! almost 11 years ago

I would go to Turkey but spend it travelling round the East and up to the Trabzon/Black Sea area, rather than the usual touristy spots on the West and Med Coast. Turkey is so diverse and the people and food are amazing. You can easily get around using public transport - bus rather than train - and its fairly cost effective.

If you had the time, then Syria, Beirut and Jordan could also be included. Syria is just coming up in the tourist options and as such, is fairly undiscovered. Beirut is THE party place for the young and beautiful and is also so full of history. Jordan is simply stunning. almost 11 years ago
