I have decided to take a gap year with my sister and I am wondering if anyone has good ideas of where I should go and why. I am a 19 year old girl and love travelling. I want to have travelled the world some day and this is my first big trip. I like major cities, little country towns and everywhere in between. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
If you're starting in Switzerland, just keep meandering through Europe for a while - no end of big cities and little country towns. Not to mention the fact you can swap cultures, languages and food with a quick train trip.
Get a Eurail pass as it'll allow you to get around cheaply! And consider some of the Eastern European countries too, don't just rush at the obvious choices of France, Spain and Italy. I personally loved Hungary and have heard that Croatia is amazing. If I had the time now, I'd be heading that way and then down into Turkey.
Travel Slowly - you have a year to really connect with the locals. Look at Couchsurfing or Airbandb or the WOOOFing scheme as ways to interact with people who live in these places. You can always come back for a whirlwind sightseeing tour later in life. But finding a year of time later on doesn't come easy.
Once you get a better idea of *roughly* where you want to go, there's loads of advice in these pages about how to get around and what to do. Have fun dreaming and planning over 3 years ago
