I'll be traveling to Japan, but I think it applies everywhere. How do you keep your passport and money and id safe when you are traveling? I considered getting a neck stash wallet, but I will be traveling in Summer so it will be obvious I've got a wallet stuffed under my shirt, and it will probably add that bit of heat that will kill me in that kind of humid climate. I also considered sticking spare cash in my shoe and hoping for the best, but I'm hoping someone can come up with a less stinky suggestion...
Always take a photocopy of your passport with you. If you're staying in a hotel/hostel use a safe where possible. We always take spare padlocks, split cash between us. I also put spare cash into the lining of our hand luggage and then lock the case even when travelling with it. It's a dilemma isn't it? Make sure all your zips are towards your body and where possible, padlock zip closed. I had money in a zipped compartment in an over shoulder bag at the station in Naples and didn't notice that I'd been pickpocketed until afterwards. Luckily, our cash was split up but all my cards were stolen. Also, email your card numbers to yourself (and card contact numbers) and make sure you have emergency phone numbers with you just in case.
Having said all that, go and have a good time. Don't take all your money in cash, use an ATM when you need to. Ok, so it costs a little but at least it's safe. about 6 years ago
When I travelled around Europe last summer I took a neck stash wallet but I didn't end up using. I felt more unsafe carrying my passport and all my cash around with me than leaving it at the hostel all locked up. I felt that if I was pickpocketed then they had the potential to take all of my stuff. I know it's not advised but I just left my neck wallet locked up in a locker in my room with a coded padlock. I was lucky to have stayed in pretty secure hostels so I had no problems with security. I was away for four months and I was lucky to not of gotten pickpocketed at all. One thing I would advise though is that be careful when taking handbags or backpacks. Keep your bags close to you and always have your eye on them. If you're in a crowed area maybe just place your backpack to the front of your body so you always have it in your view. When I'd travel the Metro in Paris I'd always do that. It made me feel safer.
Also yes I agree with Elsa you should always have copies of your passport and any other credentials. I was traveling with two friends so we all had copies of each others passports too just incase.
Good Luck and have a great trip! about 6 years ago
