I'm off to Australia in Sept next year, should I book a flight this year or wait closer to the time?
I've read that it is best to book a flight well in advance and today I've been reading that you get better deals booking a month or so before departure date.....what is your experiences? Also, are there any top tips on how to book to get the best deal, maybe flying to another country and getting a connecting flight from there? Any advise muchly appreciated!
It's a gamble. I came over Spring Break last March and I bought my ticket the first week in Feb. and I got the best deal ever with a staying here for 10days and having an overnight flight here leaving LAX and then leaving to go back to the states I left in the morning from Australia. The flight was less than $1200. My second trip to Australia I bought a one-way ticket about 2-3mo in advance and it was about $900. I highly reccomend buying a round-trip and don't do what I did because I'm looking at a one-way flight back to the States and it's nearly $2000 about 6 years ago
You can get some great deals closer to your travel date, however you also risk everything being sold out!
On the flip side if it's a peak season for your destination (eg flying from Australia to USA/Europe in June/July/August), prices may just increase astronomically all teh way up to your departure date - in this case it's much better to book at least 6 monthsin advance!
Have a look at different airlines - but make sure you know if the flight is non-stop or if it transits somewhere. The online companies don't always make it easy to see a transit or stop-over - they're a bit sneaky that way. You might find a fare online that looks crazy cheap, but you may need to pay for a nights accommodation, transfer or even a visa - and suddenly it's not so cheap and a major hassle!
Also check if your meals and baggage is included - a ticket can appear cheap until you add everything in! about 6 years ago
