Next day we are leaving for Freycinet and can take a break or two. However we have only a day to explore Hobart. We'd be renting a car.

Drive up Mount wellington - it's a 20 minute drive and you'll see amazing views over Hobart, and on a very clear day you can see Maria Island!

If you visit the Mt Wellington, you can then can continue south on the Huon Road (from Ferntree) through Longley and onto the Huon Highway. It's a nice scenic drive, and if you continue on the Huon Highway (the A6) for another 20 minutes you'll end up in Huonville. There's a few things to see and do, but the scenery is amazing, and it's only a half hour drive back to Hobart. almost 7 years ago

Definitely go up Mt Wellington, and then if you have kids, look at taking them to a wildlife park where they can see a Tassie Devil. Maybe Bonorong Park http://www.bonorong.com.au/ almost 7 years ago

Check out Alexandria battery. Its all these fortifications from back in the days when Britain was at war with France plus some infrastructure from the WWII defences. There's a big tunnel plus all these bunkers and battlements and trenches and stuff in this park. Kids will love it plus its a bit of history for the older ones. Its a park on the left hand side of the road on churchill avenue going from the city. Its towards the end not too far before it connects with sandy bay road. Maybe a 5 to 10 minute drive depending from traffic from the city in lower sandy bay. almost 7 years ago

Apart from Mt Wellington (as other suggest) and Bonerong Wildlife Park, ditch the car for the day and walk. Lots to be seen around the waterfront and Battery Point areas and loads of places to eat, etc. almost 7 years ago
