I'm finding that flying from Cairns to Denpasar, Bali is significantly more expensive than if I were to fly from Sydney to Bali. I looked into possibly taking a bus or train from Cairns to Sydney, but the entire thing amounts to over $500--way over my budget. The whole reason Cairns is my destination is because that's where I'd get to do the Great Barrier Reef! Any advice?

If you want a direct flight it will have to be Sydney - but worth considering is cairns to Bali via Darwin. If you stop over for a few days in Darwin it will give you the opportunity to visit the stunning kakadu national park, and you could get a seriously cheaper flight from Darwin to Bali with one of the discount airlines (try Tigerairways). about 4 years ago

    • This is great advice, thank you! Do you think flying from Cairns to Darwin would be the cheapest way of getting there? I found a flight for a little over $300 but I'm not sure I can find another way of getting there that'd be cheaper Page about 4 years ago

Also cheaper is to watch for special deals from the airlines (Jetstar and Virgin)that fly direct from cairns to Sydney. You can often pick up a flight for a little over $100. Subscribe to their newsletters. about 4 years ago

Looks like I might have given you some wrong info. Tiger no longer flies out of Darwin. However, you can fly cairns to Darwin, and Darwin to Bali with Jetstar for a reasonable price. Depends on when you're travelling, but if you have some lead time, subscribe to jetstar's email and watch the "Friday Frenzy" special deals they put out each Friday evening. They also have regular discount sales on various routes. I just did a quick check for a random date in February, and the total comes in around $450. about 4 years ago

By the way, flying is the only sensible way to go from cairns to Darwin, unless you have a nice yacht. about 4 years ago

Go look for Jetstar and Tiger. These airlines are notables in terms of offering very low fares for both domestic and international. Ideal for backpackers too. over 3 years ago
