I am a college student who will be staying in Cairns for 3-5 days. Any recommendations on where to stay or any can't miss excursions?
I am looking for close to a beach and a young/ party atmosphere. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.
Hi Matt - Nomads Esplanade as the name suggests is close to the Free Lagoon Pool and the waterfront. No beaches however a local bus will get you there for the day. Cairns Top 5 - Great Barrier Reef (dive or snorkel). Cape Tribulation and Daintree, Uncle Brians (Waterfalls & Tablelands) White Water Rafting & Skydiving. Let me know if you want further assistance. firstname.lastname@example.org over 8 years ago
Yes Gilligans is nice, very large & modern but try to get a top floor bedroom cause there's a bar.disco on the ground floor that will keep you awake otherwise.
Kuranda market & Sky Rail Rainforest cablecar & scenic train.
Kuranda Koala Gardens where you can hold a Koala bear.
Australian butterfly sanctuary, Kuranda
Upolu Reef boat trip from Cairns
Cairns Esplanade swimming lagoon
Green Island if you must but its hardly getting away from the maddening crowd so it wouldn't be my first choice.
Scenic plane trips over the Great Barrier Reef.
Reef Teach: Run by a mad Irishman that would give the nutty professor a run for his money. Cheap activity & gives an insight into life in the reefs before you head out. Good way to spend an evening when you arrive just dont sit at the front with a hot beverage in your hand LOL
P.S. Sorry looks like Paddy has retired & sold the business to a new crowd. You'll still be in for an experience but perhaps not as mad a one, there are very few, if any, teachers like Paddy in this world.

The road to Port Douglas is beautiful as is the rainforest hinterland of Cairns (Lake Barrine & Eacham , Millaa Millaa falls etc)
Reef trips are a must but not too tourist driven if you want good reef. I'd recommend Michaelmas & Upolu, Frankland Isles . Green Island & Fitzroy are very touristy and Hastings & Saxon have suffered damage from bleaching .
Have a wonderful trip! over 8 years agoAnswered by Lesley via WorldNomads.com
I know one of the better company's called Ocean-quest I have been on it a few times now. The staff treated us like kings (strange for Australia) and we where at a great location, the wife didn't like it as much as me as she has asthma and could only snorkel. Anyways I know you can a 15% discount if you book Ocean-Quest through the dive directory website found here! http://www.divedirectory.com.au/liveaboard-trips-overnight-oceanquest-deep-sea-divers-den/ over 8 years ago
