Darwin has become the treasure of Australian Arts and alternative lifestyle. The best time to visit is in winter, June July and August, when all the markets and festivals are on. You'll find lots of hippies!

Closer to Byron is Nimbin, just in the hills. Other then unemployed artists you'll find loads of Potheads.

Other nice towns to visit are Bellingen just south from Coffs Harbour NSW, or if in Queensland I like Agnus Waters, for the beach hippie vibe. If in Western Australia Margaret River is a must, often thought to be the Byron of yester-year. over 7 years ago

I'm assuming your wanting to find a 'hippie' town, try Nimbin. It's like fourty minutes inland from Byron but it is amazing. My favourite town. almost 6 years ago

Bangalow, about 10 or 15 km inland immediately above Byron is pretty cool. Lot's of creative types and city refugees without too many dreadlocks and the drug problems of Nimbin. Depends how 'hippie' you want to go. Bangalow is hippie-lite, I guess. almost 6 years ago
