Me and a couple of mates are thinking of heading off from Sydney on a bit of a roadtrip/camping mission. Im thinking somewhere within a days solid drive from Sydney on the coast. Does anyone have any ideas on good places to go?
You can get a long way in a day, as far as Coffs Harbour, or further!
As a guide, we often drive that far up the coast and it takes about 6-7 hours to get to Coffs. The surrounding land is beautiful up that way, especially the small town of Bellingen (bit flood prone at the moment). However, the Pacific Highway drive is pretty monotonous.
You could shorten the drive and head down the South Coast, especially Jervis Bay. The drive has much better scenery, and far more towns with great cafes/pubs/etc to stop along the way. I would recommend around Hyams Beach, it's a tiny little village on Jervis Bay with a cafe, some houses, and that's about it.
As for inland, I'm not too familiar with anything past the Blue Mountains! about 8 years ago
A cute place to visit is Mudgee - it's about 3.5 hours West Northwest of Sydney via the blue mountains. There's wineries galore, fresh country air and quite a few nice restaurants and cafes. Check out www.urwurld.com/travelguide/Australia_Mudgee_Region/ and make sure you zoom into Mudgee village, and nearby Gulgong for a few more pointers! :) about 8 years ago
North Coast is definitely my pick.
If you want to go camping there a national park camping ground at Diamond Head about 5 hours North of Sydney, just north of Taree. You'll find Kangaroo jumping through the camp ground and not a bad surf break, if you're into that.
If you're looking for relaxation and chilling out through the day and partying at night, then Byron Bay is the go, though a decent drive from Sydney. about 8 years ago
