I agree with Rexy - was going to suggest Whale Beach in particular but also Bilgola Beach - both are off the beaten track a bit i.e. not on the main public transport/bus route from Sydney so not quite as busy as Avalon, Newport, Palm Beach etc.

About an hour's drive from Sydney. over 7 years ago

The north shelf of Mckenzie's bay next to Tamarama rarely has people on it, even in the peak of summer.

South of Sydney in the National Park is Garie Beach: http://bit.ly/N3lWl

There is also a YHA there: http://bit.ly/H4N49 about 7 years ago

If you don't mind a bit of a drive 60-90 minutes, Wollongong is always a nice place, Wollongong City Beach is pretty good and is patrolled. Theres free parking too! Has a nearby BBQ area and a good cafe with good fish and chips! If you live on Sydney's South its really easy to get down there. about 7 years ago

If you don't have a car, catch a train down to Cronulla and then a boat over to Bundeena. Some great little walks and beaches to be found around there.

Alternatively, catch the 91 bus from Wynyard station and head all the way up to Palm Beach. Once there catch the ferry over to Mackrel Beach, it's a beautiful spot. about 7 years ago

Why don't you head north for about 60-90 minutes and head for Caves Beach, turn right at roundabout in Swansea. You also have access to Lake Macquarie, one of the best spots and all are very quiet. over 4 years ago

Two hours north (if that) towards Newcastle there are some great beaches. One that I would strongly recommend is Catherine Hill Bay. Good for surfing whilst also really quiet. Small old mining village so cute place to see also. over 4 years ago
