Julie, Rio can be a challenge but it's not impossible to negotiate it safely. far too much to say on the topic here so have a look at this safety guide to Rio at worldnomads.com: http://journals.worldnomads.com/safetyhub/story/69440/Brazil/Staying-Safe-in-Rio
where we've already written extensively on the issue.

Hey Julie, I think the beauties that u can find in Rio are all Huges in front of the dangerous...Good areas to stay: Botafogo; Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon.

To me the best area to stay is Ipanema. This area is full of turists and more safe. The u can find the best beaches and good restaurants during all day!

enjoy it! about 9 years ago

Hi! I live in Rio not very far from there! And I have many friends living on that street.
I can tell you that it is a safe place as any other in Rio. Just be aware of your surroundings and you should be fine! It is a very calm, residential area... And because of that, a bit deserted at night... Not many people on the street, so be even more cautious!
But other than that, it is a safe location although not really close to the beaches...
Hope you have a good time! :) about 9 years ago
