I am thinking of going to Cambodia but will have limited time, maybe two weeks. Can you see a reasonable amount of the country in that time. Any suggestions where to go?
You sure can, it's not that big (although there is quite a bit to see). Siem Reap and the temples of Angkor are an absolute must - bare minimum three days to do it justice, though I'd recommend 5 or a couple more. Battambang is ok as is Phnom Penh but in my opinion neither were amazing. I took the boat ride from Siem Reap to Battambang (9hrs) and it wasn't particularly amazing, but if you are mad keen you can give it a shot.
Depending on where else you intend to head in Asia, I would possibly recommend only spending a week or so in Cambodia, the majority in and around Siem Reap, and a day or two in Phnom Penh (from memory only takes 6 hrs by bus between the two cities). I didn't get to Koh Kong island but heard it's great - so if you wanted to spend more time in Cambodia I would consider checking it out. almost 9 years agoAnswered by richard maddock via Travellr.com
Yes, a few weeks is a good amount of time. You can't fly directly there, so getting there takes you to another Asian capital. You could take a return trip to Singapore, KL or Bangkok and enjoy a stopover ther. Then fly on to Siem Reap/Phnom Penh on Tiger, Jetstar or AirAsia.
I spet about a week in Siem Reap with routine.... Out to the Wats, back for a swim and lunch, then back out again.
The evenings we had a frozen cocktail, then an hour massage and eventually dinner.................... It was tough but we held out for a week!
Stop by the roadside cricket shops. They deep fry the crickets in spices and chilli. They are quite tasty! If you are adventurous, you could try the water beetles or spiders.
A few days in Phnom Penh is good for shopping and the necessary "distressing" cultural/historic sites. Its the first place I have been that I couldn't (emotionally) take any photos.
We didn't go south but will next time. Enjoy your trip! almost 9 years ago
Angkor Wat - pass through Phnom Penh to get to the south coast - it IS worthwhile down there - that's why in another time it was the Med of the area. Kampot and Kep are definitely worth a few days. Bus travel is easy if not hair-raising ... Cambodia is the least blest with good roads out of all SE Asia.
Cambodia will also piss you off too as corruption is so endemic - they have had 30 years since the conflict, and millions of dollars poured into it by NGO's and other aid from the world's govts and yet the place is sort of still not sorted out compared with other places like Vietnam and Laos, which seem to have regained their soul. over 8 years ago
