    Hi Henry,
Montreal is pretty safe compared to some US cities. Some of the formerly poor or "slum" areas are now being converted to yuppy condos, so I can't think of any really bad areas to avoid -- except maybe the southeast, like Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, and even parts of that are being rebuilt. As you're a student (I'm presuming McGill or Concordia?), you'll probably want to look first in the greater downtown area, which is all pretty safe if you take the usual big-city precautions and use common sense. You didn't mention your budget, so I can't really suggest anything concrete. over 6 years ago

Thanks for your answer. I'm looking close to McGill University, my budget is up to 850us$/month. Thanks! over 6 years ago

You'll be more than fine with that budget in downtown Montreal. With $850/month you can either get a really nice studio or nice one bedroom, or if you want to room with other people you can cut that in half and have an extra $425 a month for whatever else you might want to do. There's lots to do in Montreal. Enjoy! over 6 years ago

I'd suggest being slightly outside of the downtown core, but stay close to a metro station.

There only part of the city that I'd avoid is Montreal-North, but it's too far for easy access to McGill. I like the neighborhoods of little burgundy and St Henri, both in the southeast. And close to the metro and now serviced by bixi. This area used to be pretty rough but it's in a rebuilding period, so there is a good mix of economic and ethic classes. And new restaurants and bars are opening almost weekly here.

Another good neighborhood to look in is ville emard and Verdun. These are very blue collar and ethnic, but have good community and services. And the metro to McGill can have you door to door in 15 min. over 6 years ago

Living in Montreal for over 14 years, there is not problems at any time, unless you are going to choose bad friends... Then you will see the bad side as every single big city. After all MONTREAL is the best place. over 6 years ago

You are going to love Montreal, especially the McGill area. If you are a woman, the biggest danger is walking alone on the campus after dark, walk with a buddy, it seems to be a favorite for sex offenders. Also stay away from the mountain at night. Otherwise you have nothing to fear but fear itself over 5 years ago

I grew up in parc ex wich used to be really dangerous at the time but usually the crimes are more between the gangs themselves not with the people that really lives there or around there so my advice is stay away from these people and they wont bother you but on the other than that montreal is a great city to start a life there its really fun and the best parties are there over 2 years ago

The worst problem in Montreal is going to be the cold in the winter, not the street gangs....if you like winter sports like skiing or snowboarding, you will do fine.
