I went mid January 2000 and it was a bright sunny day - the chill in the air did not stop me taking off my coat and scarf and hat half way up the wall - it helps to be fit. We went on a bus tour with the local chinese. This was way cheaper and lots of fun - didn't understand a word of the commentary of course but very good value trip that included the temple of heaven and a meal voucher. Was a little shocked by the way the bus waited until all seats were filled (including the fold-down seats in the aisle) before departing - did wonder how would get out if needed to - did need a strong bladder - but that goes without saying in China. over 6 years ago

Really depends on what "too cold" is for you. I went in December when it was snowing and the wind chill factor made it fee like -30c. However the scenery was absolutely spectacular and there were next to no crowds. You just need to rug up! over 6 years ago

It is cold but often spectacularly clear skies we were there in January and visited it at a place few western tourists ever go shanhaiguan which is where it goes into the sea two hours fast train from Beijing
You can always put warm clothes on we travelled with a 7 year old and a 10 year old not used to very cold weather and they were fine
Going in winter beats the crowds
I found the forbidden city the coldest because of the wind about 5 years ago

As other posters have said it is cold but still worth it. It will be dark earlier of course but if it is a clear day you can be assured of a spectacular day on the wall and of course the steps and slopes will help you stay warm! Enjoy! almost 5 years ago

We just went there yesterday. Mutianyu section. It was bloody freezing, about 2 degrees. Worse of all the steps were covered in snow and ice, so many people were falling over. Took a lot longer than normal, but well worth the effort. Vince over 3 years ago
