We're thinking of going to Bogota in August but hearing conflicting reports about the safety. Wondering about that and any other advice - where to stay in the city, any great day or overnight side trips or must do tours/excursions. Thank you!

Hi Nita, I recommend for you to stay in Chapinero ( norther chapinero) or parque 93. It is a very cool area with lots of restaurants, bars and nightclubs and safe to walk around. Many tourists chose to stay in La Candelaria, which is the colonial part of town and also beautiful, but I personally find it too touristy! The Gold mueseum is really cool and you can enjoy a beautful view over the city from Monserate. Make sure you make a trip to Chia and dine and party at Andres carne de Res ( there are two, the one in Chia is much better than the one in the city). Have fun! over 5 years ago

Nita, as a general guide, the north and the east of the city are relatively ok. But there are crime hot spots throughout the area. There's a detailed article here on the worldnomads.com safety hub.
