Costa Rica is a really beautiful place, which is why it's so popular with Nth American tourists and retirees (or those escaping the rat race).
It's reputation as a high crime spot is not totally undeserved. It's not "off the scale" but you need to be cautious.
Sadly Lisa, harrassment of women - especially those alone on a beach - is a problem and occasionally it turns violent.
But don't be too alarmed, here're a few tips to staying safe:

Doubt Phil has been to Nosara, or even CR thanks for dropping your "business" on here. As for Nosara, it is an amazing town with so much to do! Sunset at La Luna is to die for! Italian dinner at La Dolce Vita.. and I have lived in Nosara and never had an issue w any harrassment! The people are beautiful and friendly, then again I am a New Yorker and will shut it down if I need to (there has never been a need!). Places to stay - check out Namaste Oasis at www.NamasteOasis.com its a brand new condo you can rent for a week.. walking distance to Nosara Yoga which has 2-3 class a day. So much to do and I LOVE this area!!! Enjoy almost 5 years ago
My family (including 2 small kids) just returned from Nosara. We had a great time & always felt safe. Exercise the same general caution you would anywhere else & you will be fine.
As for housing, we prefer houses over hotels & condos as a personal preference. You can find either in Playa Guiones very near the beach & restaurants. I highly recommend calling Diana at NosaraTravel.com She is a local & is very reliable, professional & trustworthy. On this last trip, we did not book pursues thru them & that turned out to be a big mistake..!
We do not recommend Surfing Nosara for housing. Our experience with them was good until we arrived in CR. Then we were turned over to the property owner & the issues began. We stayed in a house called Shangri La and had daily issues like no power & no wifi, etc. Very very slow response times due to the Manager (owners son) always at the beach. Hey, I guess it's a good job if you can get it.
If you prefer condos I recommend you look at Cafe de Paris. They have condos, a couple of restaurants & nice pool area.
We will definitely be back. Other things on Nosara we enjoyed we're the Miss Sky Zip Line tour & dining at La Dolce Vita, Rancho Tico & La Luna. I also recommend renting a golf cart from Paradise Rentals... Much easier to get around the area than a car. All this info is on the Nosara Travel website.
Enjoy your trip..! almost 5 years ago
