The Malacon is a beachy area in the city. Totally restored by the government and frequented by the locals. The cool beach is Playa Cofresi a few miles out of town. Costamber beach is nearby. In the opposite direction towards the airport is Playa Dorada, with great beaches and hotels. Sousa beach a little further beyond, and then Cabarete beach is my favorite with the kitesurfing, a very cool place to hang. over 6 years ago

Stayed at the Iberostar resort in Puerto Plata. Very nice. Clean facilities, good food, although the a la carte dining experience was somewhat overrated (actually found the main dining preferable). All non-motorized recreation is included in your costs so nice sailing. Beach was so-so, but other amenities were fine. Overall, it was a positive experience. about 6 years ago
