    Personally I think about 6 days - there's a lot to see:

    Meidum
    Dahshur pyramids
    Saqqara
    Giza pyramids
    Egyptian Museum
    Citadel
    Old Cairo (Coptic Cairo)
    Khan il Khalili
    Street of the Tentmakers
    Cairo Tower
    Islamic Cairo
    Museum of Islamic Art
    Geyer-Anderson Museum
    Birqash Camel Market
    Cairo Opera House
    Museum of Modern Art
    Manial Palace
    Nilometer
    Al Azhar Mosque
    Ibn Tulun Mosque
    City Stars Mall

good bookshops and art galleries and coffee shops

    to name a few things

and that's not even talking about visiting the beautiful Fayoum ... and you must also visit Alexandria :-)

    and at night

    Pyramids Sound & Light Show
    Cairo Jazz Club
    El Sawy Culture Wheel
    Tannoura at Wekalet el Ghouri
    Dinner on a Nile cruise
    Cairo Tower at night

it's all a matter of your interests :-)

I personally hated Cairo...I managed to see everything I wanted to see in the three days I was there ....vendors were very pushy there about 5 years ago

I agree with last post. I was based here for six weeks but traveled here more often. Its one of the places in the world I've no desire to return to. Vendors extremely pushy as they said, but to the point of being rude and obnoxious in your face and threatening. Drivers the very worst in the world. Ive lived and traveled all over the middle east so the culture wasn't a shock to me. Cairo is different and I mean that in a negative way. My advice is also 3 days, and you can see everything. Some of the advice above is very touristy and rip off touristy I mean. over 3 years ago

Depending on your interests, I'd say 7 days. You don't want to rush through everything in the heat.

I lived in Cairo and loved it there. I found most Egyptians to be welcoming and vendors more polite than those in the states. But I also speak some Arabic, I don't mind covering my hair with a scarf, and I can pass for Egyptian. Every experience is shaped by what you bring to it. over 3 years ago

I spent about 3 weeks in Cairo in 09. Visit Cafe Cecil an old style Coffee shop, about 10 minutes walk from Tahrir Square. When I was in Cairo dust was really bad most travellers had the Cairo cough !! I stayed at Sun Hotel [cheap] overlooking the square. If yYou have time visit Alexandria stayed at Normandy Hotel [cheap]right across from the harbour. The lift in the building is straight from the 1920's !! over 3 years ago
