I'm wondering specifically about countries like Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. I'm planning on backpacking to all of the capitals and staying at campgrounds about 20-30 minutes away from the centers. I've read from other posts that it may be even safer to leave belongings in a tent than in a hostel dorm and I'm wondering if there are any people who agree or disagree with that, perhaps from experience in leaving belongings at a dorm or in a tent. I would have a separate backpack with me to take all of my valuable with me, so I would only be leaving things like my large backpack (locked in mesh), clothing, and miscellaneous invaluable things locked in my tent. I would also leave the tent in a highly visible place. I guess what I'm really wondering is, is this a good idea?

James, you've got the right idea.... don't leave behind anything you'd miss if it was stolen. You can always buy a new backpack. Keep the valuable (and important) stuff close to you at all times. Common sense would tell you dorms give thieves more opportunity to do their deeds undetected.
I'd suggest that when you pitch your tent you make the acquaintance of the people next to you, let them know you should be the only one going in the tent.
While you're in that part of the world, check out Slovenia - a friend of mine tells me it's great (an undiscovered gem). Good luck. over 7 years ago
