Depends when you intend to go there.

In the summer it gets packed out and the only cheap places you will find are not walking distance. However this is not much of a problem because public transport is great in Paris and doesn't cost a lot.

My advice is just hop on HostelWorld whenever you know when you want to be there and look for some cheap options. The ratings on hostelworld will usually give you some good idea about how central and what sort of district the place is in.

Last time I was in Paris I stayed in Oops hostel. It is quite nice with 4 bed dorms, cheap (or maybe free now according to hostelworld) internet access and free croissants for breakfast.
It is pretty central, Place d’Italie, walking distance from town, but also very close to a metro station over 7 years ago

Yeah I agree with Niko about Hostelworld about being a good website. I have used it quite a few times without problems. You can pick up some bargains from very nice hotels listing rooms at the last minute that way too. Just be sure when you book that you make a note of when you have listed your arrival time and try to stick to it. I got in trouble with a place in Paris for arriving an hour later than I had said in the booking- they had given my room away but quickly found another in a nearby hostel. There are a few other websites worth looking at like Hostelz.com, Bootsnall.com. Just google "hostels paris" and I am sure it will come up with many options. Many of them you can specify if you want a dorm or private room and can see the various locations marked on a map so you can choose what area you want to look at ( this is on hostelworld, not sure about the others). over 7 years ago

I can recommend "Luxor" in the Marais. Although the rooms are small (they all are in Paris!) it's clean and in a safe area with easy access to food shops, cafes and a laundromat. over 7 years ago
