I'm looking to get a pay as you go SIM card for trips to Germany, and am wondering which mobile providers have the best deals and features. Some of the features I'm interested in are the ability to top up the account with a non-German credit card online, and possibly the ability to use packet data services as well.
Well the cheapest is a sim that goes by the name of "blau" (german for "blue"). Very cheap. Problem is that you can only recharge online as far as I know, and the website is only in German so if you dont speak the language you might need a mate who can to help you. You can recharge with any credit card so long as its visa or mastercard. When registering for a simcard in Germany be mindfull to have a bit of time up your sleve. You know the cliche that Germans love their paperwork and to have everything in order? Well its true, its not as simple as buying a sim and putting it in your phone like everywhere alse, bring your passport along and allow a good half hour of forms to fill out. Most phone shop people speak english and can guide you through the form. about 9 years ago

Vodafone has second best coverage and has a E10 package with 500MB data and 200 minutes per month, cash up front, so you don't lose your friends and can track Google maps hiking. Some of smaller companies have spotty coverage. about 3 years ago
