I will be arriving in Hamburg on April 3 for a 9 day visit. Based in Luneburg. Would like to take some day trips and one or 2 overnight trips. Need some recommendations. Not keen on big cities. Have access to a car. Thanks.

Visit to a concentration camp is an unforgettable experience. It is not easy visit but it is so important we don´t forget. Neuengamme is in the outskirts of Hamburg and worth visiting.

Give the Nurbergringer a go (near Bonn) if you want to see the German's love of motorsport. The forest around there is spectacular in autumn. Bonn is also not a bad place to visit - really a university town now, but I can recommend the beer garden overlooking the rhine in the old fort near the university.

I would also give yourself some time to explore Berlin - it is a fantastic city with lots of things to do and see, over 5 years ago

Try Celle. Easy day trip from Hamburg. Few tourists other than Germans. Beautiful small city with lots of fachwerk houses. Check out the city web site. Also, Lubeck. Worth a visit, easy day trip. about 5 years ago

I am not familiar with northern Germany however if you get as far south as Bonn (a city, however not so big) which in itself is worth seeing you can drive through the Eiffel hills to the medieval town of Bad Munstereiffel. It is a magical, out of this world place and worth an overnight stay.

You could also head into Holland to places like Volendam & Marken however perhaps you prefer to stay in Germany. about 5 years ago

Near Luemeburg is the so called Lueneburger Heide, great nature! Also a big amusement park, Heidepark, with great rollercoasters :-)
And as somebody above told you, there is a former KZ near Lueneburg, Bergen Belsen, where Anne Frank died.
A little more in the west, in Bremerhaven, is a museum about people who went to the Usa in the last Centuries, the "Auswandererhaus".
Enjoy your time here! about 5 years ago
