Is knowing German required in clothes shops, cafes, restaurants, cinemas etc. or do most people have a good level of English fluency? Do Germans frown upon hearing English? Are restaurant menus always in German only?

It isn't so much age related as whether someone is from West Berlin or East Berlin. Almost all young people speak decent english in Berlin. You can't expect the same from older East Berliners, such as bakers, train staff etc. But yes, most shop assistants, cafe staff and waiters know an adequate amount of english. Menus, though are only in German. I wouldn't expect english as a medium in official or any government related business. And no, people are not offended at hearing english. In fact, I found I had to really ask them to be patient with my broken German as they would always want to practise their english with me! almost 5 years ago
