We'll be in Athens and on Mykonos, Santorini and Crete. Are we likely to encounter strikes or other problems?

There may be strikes in September but all strikes general strikes are for one day - that means there's a chance that your schedule may have to be altered for one day - that's all.

I would not worry. Have been sailing all over the Aegean since May and have not noticed anything different since last year. The strikes in Athens (not as bad as people make it out to be, I went to see one and apart a few trouble makers and some tear gas, people were selling cokes and bread cakes to those around :-) do not affect elsewhere. After 30 traveling and sailing around Greece, it's no different this year than others.

Visit Spetses and Idra, South of Athens, and if you can get that far, Symi and Megisti (Kastellorizo) off of Turkey. also the Ionian is nice.

You will see, in the islands, time has stopped and there is little effect from problems in Athens.

By the way, if there are no strikes, then business as usual. No need to worry. about 5 years ago

It was a problem for me last summer so I suppose it will be this year too. In particular the strikes at the ferries, the airport, and the gasoline strike. It just turns the mood ugly and you should probably make some contingency plans. about 5 years ago

If you plan to stay in the centre of Athens probably yes.
Arrange private transfers prior to arrival, stay in a hotel little off the syntagma sq nucleus, have a plan b (shopping, short trip outside Athens) if there strikes.

Make sure a knowledgeable travel agent is looking after your airport transfers and connections as well as your moves from/to Athens and the islands

You get a few day's warning of when there'll be a general strike or strike action by a particular group. September is a bit far off to be sure of the dates.
Presently the taxi drivers in Athens are continuing an indefinite strike and 1000 of them abandoned their cabs on the roadside and protested inside macedonia airport on Tuesday. The ferries union will meet in August to decide on future action (that means September).
A good source of strike information is http://www.ekathimerini.com an English language online Greek newspaper. about 5 years ago
