We are arriving in Athens next week. I'm probably being over imaginative, but wanted to check if the route is safe as on the map it looks like the shortest route to Piraeus goes close to Syntagma. Also, we plan to go to Syros. What's it like? Thanks

Vomara, unless there's one of the famous protests occurring on the day you travel you'll be fine. It's not like Tahrir Square where protesters camped out for weeks on end, it's just a focal point for protests. Even if it IS a protest day, you'd be fairly safe driving the perimeter as long as you don't stop and go take a look!.
Unless it's a strike day (and you get at least a few day's warning of when that'll be) you'll be able to get to your island easily and safely.
latest strike info is: Athens taxi drivers strike from 5am July 18 to 5am July 20th.
There's almost no sign at all of the austerity protests on the islands. You won't even know they're going on while you soak up the sun and the retsina!

    • Thank you for the response. We arrive on the 20th so hopefully we will get away with it!? Alternatively I have been looking into buses. I understand the X95 goes into Syntagma while the X96 doesn't? vomara about 7 years ago

Not a problem if you go by taxi. You can fly into Syros as well.

Syros is among my favorite islands. The main town is great. Excellent beaches on the west side. And if you are in the mood, it's a quick hop to Mykonos. The island of Delos is worth a visit.
