Mexicans suggested that safer to hire a Guatemalan car, but want to travel on through to Belize and circle back through Yucatan, but as I mentioned have small kids ( and tripple black belt husband!), so don't want to take unnecessary risks, if best not too! However people in Yucatan warned us about people in Chiappas, and they couldn't be sweeter, so wondering if this is same thing? Any thoughts from those in the "know" hugely appreciated!

I will be making a similar trip. my family of 4 will be circling the perimeter of North and Central America over the course of 10 months in a new-to-us 2007 car w/ Canadian plates.

a friend suggested that we take our own car as far as Belize, then consider buying or renting a "clunker" for other parts of Central America so as not to stick out any more than we already will. the last times I traveled in that part of the world (Mexco, 2006, Nicaraugua, 1988) I didn't have a car, so I hired cabs or jumped on local collectivos.

what will you be driving? your own car or a rented one from MX? over 7 years ago
