Exploring Iceland in December

almost 4 years ago about Iceland

I'm a solo traveler going to Iceland for 5 days in Iceland between Christmas and New Year. How are the driving conditions around that time? I want to go to Kirkjufell, explore the Golden circle, Gullfoss falls and some ice caves near Vatnajökull N.P.

  • After the trip: Driving was fine. Cars have snow tires and roads are well maintained. Conditions shift very quickly so check road.is frequently. A few freak snow storms. Pat over 3 years ago

Not recommended to drive yourselves it is extremely dangerous with ice, winds, visibility etc get a tour from Reykjavik - there are lots of them and the are experienced.
We are going with Nordic visitor and come highly recommended. almost 4 years ago

Agreed - driving in the conditions in winter is really tricky so book onto a couple day trips! If you stay at a hostel you're bound to meet loads of people to do the trips with which can be booked at reception of most places. Blue Lagoon at night is stunning, along with the Golden Circle as a must visit. If you love waterfalls a trip down to the southern shore is special or if you're feeling brave you can swim between the two continents and touch both the Eurasia & North American continents at the same time! almost 4 years ago

Remember that there will be THREE hours of day light at best during this time!

I love solo travel in Iceland - and almost everywhere.
I swam and floated in a hot pool, had vodka in an ice house, and brought back a whole smoked salmon for a party with friends. As a travel writer I long for new vistas, yet will return to Iceland. almost 4 years ago

Solo travel in Iceland is easy, except for winter weather and lack of daylight. I loved my Sept trip but agree with Deb Smith -- with 3 hours of daylight you won't see much. Golden circle is a full day trip for example. almost 4 years ago
