In laymen terms, hotel star rating is just a qualitative rating aimed at categorizing hotels on the basis of their facilities/services, budget, accommodation standards, etc. There is no set standard actually. In the US, hotel star ratings are usually based on the taxes paid by the hotels. Elsewhere, it is according to facilities provided. So, a budget hotel providing the very basic accommodation facilities will qualify as a one-star hotel. Often, the ratings are not set in stone and the same hotel can be rated as a 2-star or a 3-star by two different reviewers. over 3 years ago

One-star Meets budget basic needs Economy, no-frills accommodations Simple accommodations

Two-star Meets basic needs Value, clean, basic Value, comfortable, affordable

Three-star High service, additional amenities Quality, style, comfort, personalized service Mid-scale, convenience plus comfort

Four-star Superior property, variety of amenities Superior, upscale, high quality Deluxe/upscale, comfort plus quality

    Five-star
Luxury setting, flawless guest services Finest hotels, luxury, superlative service, highest comfort standards Luxury, first-class services, well equipped and state of the art facilities

You will find that a five star in India is VERY different from a five star in Canada or Europe unless you are into the chains that strive to keep the same quality up around the planet. Often with varying success.

Resorts and hotels. They system is the same. I do not think there is much difference although resorts tend to be more casual in dress and more laid back but the quality of service and decor of equal level. Most actually advertise as resorts and hotels. over 3 years ago
