I am planning to travel either to Indonesia or Philippines in July and I saw that there are some safety issues due to terrorists attacks in both countries. Can someone tell me if this is a real issue and which of the countries is more safe? Thanks a lot

Yes, Indonesia is relatively safe. You can't predict when terrorist attack would happen in a place, just like you can't predict when an earthquake would happen. Indonesia is popular among foreign tourists. In the past it has suffered from several attacks in Bali, or Jakarta. But it hasn't been happening for a while now. 11 months ago

I travelled as a lone female in the Philippines for a total of 5 months and it's an amazing country! Just like Yani said above you can't predict when bad things will happen, no matter which country your in, so you shouldn't let that change your idea of the countries you want to visit! Although there are some areas in the Philippines that you may want to avoid if you're still cautious, like Southern Mindano and some parts of Cebu. But I have travelled alone to both places, and actually lived in Mindanao for 2 months with absolutely no problems.. it's all about common sense really! But if you just stick to the main parts of Cebu and other touristy places like Palawan, Siquijor, Siargao, Bohol, Boracay, Sagada and Banaue you shouldn't have any problems at all, Philippines is by far my favourite country of all time!! 10 months ago

All countries have different negative stories to tell. We can't predict if something's bad going to happen. If choosing between Indonesia and the Philippines, I'd rather choose the Philippines. They offer so many good stuff - from food, to places to see, many adventurous activities and most especially with the hospitality of the Filipino people. A country rich of culture and good people. 10 months ago

Indonesia has much less violent crime. Terrorism could be a problem anywhere on our planet except places like Greenland and Antarctica. 10 months ago

Hey, I just spent two months backpacking Indonesia. I went to Sumatra, Bali, Gili T, Lombok Flores, and Lambongan. Only place I had any problem was in Kuta Bali (which is a dump where all the tourists go to party) lots of pickpocketers, prostitutes, and drugs there. Best to avoid because you literally aren't missing anything if you have been inside a club before. The rest of Indonesia was absolutely incredible, just use common sense! 8 months ago

Came back from Indonesia 3 weeks ago (Papua & Sulawesi), also visited Sulawesi and Bali last September, traveled alone and in group. Papua is kinda strange, esp if you travel alone, and not so many people speak English, but in general I felt safe there, however I found towns not attractive there and walking on streets alone was not my favorite thing to do, esp in the dark (no lights at streets at all, some small robberies are common in Wamena and Sentani). Some parts of Papua might be dangerous because of conflicts between tribes and Government, but if you plan carefully and have a trusted guide - everything will be ok, it's an amazing place to explore! Had no problems in South Sulawesi (Toraja, Sengkang, Bira) at all, I find people very friendly there, no matter what religion. However it's better to cover your shoulders and knees. Simply out of respect for locals. Other than that I think it's a safe place. Been 3 times to the Philippines - in general I felt very safe there as well, except Manila. But I think in both countries biggest concern was small crimes in cities, drugs in touristic places, not very safe boats, and nothing about terrorism.
Personally I find Philippines more open friendly (people), but Indonesia more interesting with all its tribes and cultures.
Anyway stay safe and have the best experience in whatever country you choose!! 8 months ago
