I have been looking a several itineraries so I am not limiting this question to any one place or time. I have found some round trip tickets that cost less than a one way ticket to the same place on the same airline and date. Is there any explanation for this or am I reading something wrong? Would it be illegal to buy the round trip ticket and just use the first part? Has anyone else found this situation? Please advise me what is going on. Thanks

You can do it but if you have any other flights on the itineraries they can be canceled as a result. about 4 years ago

This is common with airlines, though it makes no sense. It used to be a common practice to do what you're suggesting, but now the airline stores the information in their computer and penalizes you the next time you want a reservation. almost 4 years ago
