You can visit most of Italy on a budget. Maybe a train pass will be the best for you. I had one for a month unlimited travel in Italy. Its like eurorail but just for Italy. I'm sure you can organise it before you leave.

Loads of nice cheap family run hotels all over Italy. Don't forget hotel/backpackers, you can still get your own room and meet some nice people while you are there. Most are family run and very friendly!

South of Italy is my favourite and incidently cheaper as well. The food is way better and the people more friendly! Try Naples. over 7 years ago

I've always found shoulder season the best - I was in Venice in March and it was possible to have places to yourself and the weather was quite pleasant. Rome in October is the same - not the crowds of summer, and it was certainly shorts and t-shirt weather during the day! over 7 years ago

Rome is one of the most beautiful italian and european city. You can't miss it if you go to Italy. Not so distant there are Florence and Naples, beautiful city as well. These cities aren't so cheap but it sure is worth it. Summer can be pretty hot and and crowded. I'd suggest to go in springtime.

Italy is also full of old little towns, very nice and unexpensive to visit. i think renting a car and sleeping every night in a different place would be a good way to see a lot of nice and almost unknown places. over 7 years ago

Italy isn't very cheap. The easiest way to visit it for free is having friends that live in that can host you. Hotels are most of the times expensive, you can save a lot of money if you rent an apartment.
The best period to visit Italy in my opinion is June or September when in the south the sea is warm and the temperatures not too hot as they are in July and August. During this time of year, especially on the sea prices are lower than August and July when many italians use to go on holiday. over 4 years ago
