In march 2012 my 21 year old daughter and i made a great visit to Pompeii from Rome (we arranged to be met by a good English speaking guide at the site). We changed to the little local train to Pompeii in Napoli that runs thru very poor but colorful neighborhoods. On return we stopped in Naples for the fabulous museum (which houses most of the frescoes from Pompeii) and pizza. Remember that the last express train for Roma leaves Naples really early in the evening (so no time to linger over dinner). Bags and wallets being stollen are a tremendous problem that occurred to other tourists right before our very eyes and so we were glad we had not brought any luggage (to stay over) with us.
There are also Tour Bus day trips from Rome that make it even easier. about 3 years ago

Trains in Italy are fast and efficient. You can do it in a day, but it's a long day, and Pompeii is enormous with a great deal to see, so start early and check the train timetables carefully. about 3 years ago

You could do it in a day, but I was sad that I only did it in a day. Its a huge place with thins to explore and so beautiful that you want to spend hours upon hours there. Just go for two days!! almost 2 years ago
