Jamaica has Very friendly people. Ive been several times. You didnt say what city but you can usually find someone who will offer advice or a local tour for a negotiable and usually small fee. Just treat your trip with general caution and you'll be fine. Don't go down dark alleys with strangers, don't take any packages from strangers, don't take drugs or drink too heavily, stay together, etc. over 2 years ago

Jamaica has a pretty high level of petty crime. It's usually not violent, but it's a place where you need to take precautions.
Have a look at these tips from worldnomads.com:

I'd avoid the slum areas of Kingston and Spanish Town if I were you, and take care in most places. Even the gated resorts can be a bit dodgy after dark.
It's not so bad as to stop you going.... just take care.

Why go there? Jamaica is a dump and the people, generally speaking are not friendly. There are a million great places to spend your hard earned money. Why do you want to spend your time and money in a second rate trash dump? For a tenth of the price you can go to San Andreas or Santa Marta in Colombia. You'll be safer, see a million more things, meet wonderful people, eat delicious food, and spend a fraction of what it would cost in Jamaica! over 2 years ago

I have been to Jamaica over 60 times. We camped up in the Blue Mountains and did the hike up to Blue Mountain Peak. Stayed at Whitfield Hall above Mavis Bank. The people were amazing there. Two girls traveling alone? Might draw a lot of attention from the men. I'm up in the air as to the right advice to provide. I would feel more comfortable if you had a trustworthy guide with you. You might Google Whitfield Hall and call them.
    Take care,

Don't. Violent crime is rife and Jamaican men are aggressive and don't like being told no. over 2 years ago

Have spent time in the Montego area, Negril, and mountains in the west side. It's expensive to hire taxi's to get around - but the roads are not very safe for walking & anyway you'll get stopped so often by the drivers anyway you'll want to hop in a car! Most beaches are private at the various resorts and the public ones are usually associated w/ restaurants & have guards. The people are great! The water is amazing. over 2 years ago

Jamaica is what you make of it I travel alone and I did just find because I am a tall attractive lady so you know the attention was there if you act accordingly to give respect you will be respected back.. I really enjoyed myself solo and I am going again Ocho Rios is where I would return this year.. But backpacking is not in my plan but do have common sense and use them.. It will be two of you and it was one of me so enjoy and be safe.. about 1 year ago
