Best place to meet people in Japan?

almost 7 years ago about Japan

Looking at heading to Japan for a month or so but have heard it can be quite isolating. What's the best way to meet people quickly? I assume staying in backpackers etc, but can anyone help me with something more specific?

Generally, easiest way to meet ppl is through ex-pats, they're always friendly, know all the great places and usually know some Japanese students/friends who won't be shy to have a chat.

If you're heading to Tokyo, head to Roppongi - what we call Gai Jin (foreigner) central. They're some great pubs/bars there where you're sure to meet some ex-pats and locals who can give you an idea of what to do and where to go. almost 7 years ago

I'd agree with Wai, but another option might be to try CouchSurfing.com for an inside experience: there were 4,000 offers available last time I looked including such quotes as "Want to meet cool Japanese local people? Want to have a party with Couch Surfers and locals? Are you interested in real Japanese culture? ..." etc. I'd give it a go if I were your age ... you can put up with almost anything for a few weeks! almost 7 years ago

Thanks for the quick responses - I think I'd prefer to meet locals rather than other tourists / ex-pats, so the couchsurfing approach might be interesting! almost 7 years ago

    Agree with the couchsurfing.org group

They can be invaluable in any new place - from offering a free bed to showing you the sights, and everything in between. almost 7 years ago
