I stayed at a place downtown called the Palace Hotel.
It was a typical budget hotel but it had a great lobby/restaurant area. I met and chatted with a New Zealand traveler who had been traveling for over 60 years. He and his wife took a 2 year trip around the world in 1957 :) The hotel also arranges trips to Petra and it's an easy place to find others to travel with (if you are solo or want to share a ride)
There's a great falafel restaurant just up the street called the Hashem Restaurant
For great coffee, shakes, snack food and internet try the Books@Cafe. It's well worth the hike up from downtown and it's easy to get a cab there. It sits above Amman so it's a great place to see the sun set and listen to the call to prayer.
