I am going on a school trip to Malawi and we're going via Kenya and spending 3 nights in the Masai Mara Safari. I'm very excited, but a little bit hesitant about safety.
We will be flying into Nairobi, spending a few hours in the airport, then driving through it and Kenya to the Masai Mara. We will be on a tourist bus, there's around 40 of us travelling.
Does this sound safe, do you have any tips? And is Masai Mara a safe, secure place to stay? Also, we will be travelling with Kenya Airways, is this reputable and safe?
Thanks!

Wow, lucky you! It sounds like the trip organisers know what they're doing - Nairobi is not somewhere that you want to hang around. There are high levels of crime in the city centre and some of the outer suburbs are almost no-go zones for visitors like yourself. But you won't be going there anyway.
You may have read about terrorist attacks and conflict with insurgents from Somalia - that's all happening well away from where you're going. Again little to concern you.
There's nothing especially dangerous about the Masai Mara (apart from the obvious - wild animals and it's remote, and the water isn't safe to drink).

I lived and work with Maasai's and like the answer above Nairobi is not that safe if you are not in groups and cautious of your surroundings. As for the Mara and Maasai-land in general its pretty safe there. It's out in the country parts of Kenya. As a tourist though its always wise to be cautious when doing tourist attraction type of things. I'm going to Kenya for 6 weeks to shoot a documentary in a village there with my NGO partner. Check out our organization. http://www.assistsociety.org Maybe after I'm finished I'll submit it to World Nomad.. :) We will see. about 5 years ago
