One week isn't all that long in Laos, especially if you're planning on getting around by Bus (the roads are slow!). If I had only one week, I'd base myself in Luang Prabang and spend time doing temples, afternoons of BeerLao by the Mekong, and day trips out to other small villages almost 4 years ago

Definitely go to Luang Prabang. It's a beautiful city, very easy to get around & fabulous food, great coffee at Jomas & lovely, friendly people. Just an hour away from Luang
Prabang is a beautiful waterfall & right near that is a bear sanctuary that has rescued bears from poaching, the restaurant trade etc. The bears are all well cared for & happy now in their new, safe home. Well worth a visit. almost 4 years ago

Luang Prabang is definitely a base. It is beautiful and peaceful but a good starting point for many adventures or just enjoying the city which is a Unesco World Heritage Site. It is a small city so you can get around by bicycles or walking and see different things every day. Luang Prabang is a convergence of the Mekong River and the Nam Khan River so plenty of boating activities as well. almost 4 years ago
