I've just landed with 2 extra weeks of holidays on my hands to take till the end of the year and would like to go to the Baltic states. When would be the best time to plan the trip?

Well in the winter its gonna get pretty cold and that might deter some people, personally though I think there is a certain charm in winter, especially in that area of Europe. Plus its not like your going to Latvia for the beaches. If you have 2 weeks thats a pretty good amount of time for a Baltic trip. Be prepared tho to spend more time in Riga then you planned, that city is awesome and its one of those places that you never want to leave (well at least it was fr me).

A good hostel in Riga is called "friendly fun franks" http://www.franksbackpackers.hostel.com/ . I had an absolute blast at this place. Really friendly staff, great location, always parties in the hostel also they have some sweet optional extras such as bobsledding (which was great!).

One tip tho is if you venture down to Lithuania make sure you check out Grutas Park http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12635612. Its this forest where some guy has set up hundreds of statues from the communist era. So you wander around this eerie forest which is set up like a prison camp looking at all these huge statues of Stalin, Lenin etc. Definately a unique experience! over 7 years ago

Lived there for a year. Summer is absolutely the best time to be there. Plus, in July there is the Latvian cultural festival. about 5 years ago

It depends on what you want to see and do. Riga is a cosmopolitan city, there is always something going on. Late spring is nice, but the week of Midsummer the city practically empties out as everyone heads to the countryside to celebrate.

The Albert Hotel on Alberta street is very nice and reasonably priced, also Radi un Draugi in Old Town. about 5 years ago

In most of Baltic countries the best time is summer. Of course, it might be little hot some times, but for those you wish good weather - summer. Don't forget spring too. From April to June is also nice weather. May and June is with green, so it's more enjoyable for eyes and not that hot. As also not that much tourist the price can bee even smaller that in summer season. Autumn, at least September mostly is also nice. If you have much time, you can rent a car and travel from Latvia to Lithuania, Vilnius has a very nice old town, nice sea cost in Nida and so on. You can even travel from Ryga to Vilnius with bus and rent a car in Vilnius, so you will save some money if you don't want to travel from Latvia to Lithuania with car but just have sightseeing in Lithuania and reach your travel destinations for example Lithuania. I stayed in Lithuania this September. I had great time and saw a lot. I rented a car, so I can recommend this company TRUERENT (car rental in Vilnius, http://www.truerent.lt/en). PS in Christmas time is also nice - from December, when cities dress up for x-mas, also if there is snow, looks very nice. I should visit it in this time, from photos it seemed very nice. Of course, must take warm clothes :) almost 4 years ago

End of June (Midsummer night), July -summer
    January, february, march - winter,
Never come in Autumn, in the beginning is not so worse, but later.
Late spring - End of the April and May is good too. over 3 years ago

Mid summers night, the whole town has a party, the men with oak leaf garlands and the women with flowers. I think these celebrations are not on the 21 st but on St John's day, a few days later. almost 2 years ago
