Travelling from Surat Thani, after 6 months in the north of Thailand. What shall we prepare for, we have a tight budget and will be looking for cheap hostels and possible opportunities to stay and be involved in daily Malay life.
Any help, info would be grand.

Perhaps you could stay at one of the budget inns at Bukit Bintang @ Jalan Alor in Kuala Lumpur. There are many local hawker stalls. Despite the nearby areas which have been mushroomed with shopping malls around, however, you would find some old historical buildings being converted to restaurants and inns. If you have the luxurious of time, perhaps you would want to spend a week or two in Kuantan, Pahang Malaysia. It's at the east coast of Malaysia, and it's about 3hrs (by car) journey from Kuala Lumpur. There are fishing villages and there, you will have the opportunity to witness the local malays everyday's life in fishing village. There are many 'home-stay' accomodation and you don't have to stay in hotel. Home-stay styled accomodation let you rent the whole house or room in a much cheaper rate compare to hotels. In Kuantan, you will find many beaches as well. over 6 years ago
