I am Australian, and am booked to volunteer for one week in early March this year 2014. I asked the zoo by email if I need a visa but they did not know. I can't seem to find the information about volunteering and visa, anyone have a clear answer please?

    LongAwaited,
if you're a stickler for the rules, then I understand that you can obtain a special visit visa on arrival in Malaysia. Tell the immigration officials about your volunteering plan.
Personally, and this is not the opinion of my employer, I never volunteer more information than required or asked for. ("Are you here on business?" "No")
I've also checked with a few volunteering sites online and in their FAQs they say a tourist visa is all you need.
    Aussies can get a 30 day visa-on-arrival.
If you need to clarify (and you enjoy bureaucracy) call the Malaysian High Commission in Canberra (or one of the consulates).
