The Dia de Muertos is celebrated almost in all Mexico, but every city has its own ways. Michoacan is famous because the locals spend all night at the cementeries and bring flowers and food to stay with their love ones that are gone. The celebration is more picturesque in the small towns, but you must ask for more references of you want to go to a small town because it could be dangerous for different reasons: poisonous animals, bad roads, no hospitals, foreigners may not be welcome, etc. almost 5 years ago

Oaxaca has one of the biggest celebrations. We took a two week Spanish course in Oaxaca a couple of years ago during Los Dias de Los Muertos festivities and it was amazing, especially since the school arranged a lot of excursions that we would never have found on our own over 4 years ago

Go to Patzcuaro, Michoacan on November 1st and on the 2nd to Janitzio Island. Patzcuaro is great for shopping and buying the paper mache "calacas", there are several things to see and great accommodations. But Janitzio is a whole experience, crossing the lake to the island, climbing to the top of the mountain crossing cemeteries and enjoying the local folklore! And also you get great pictures. over 4 years ago
