This is the subject of a lot of confusion.
Most people think that it is legal there, when as far as I know (and according to wikipedia) it actually is NOT LEGAL.
It is actually considered a misdemeanor and you can be fined for possession, even for personal use.
All of this said, it is not enforced and the coffee shops selling hash brownies and other cool stuff conduct their business without any concerns for police busts.
My only advice is, if you are going to consume anything, just behave yourself and don't have too much. Police will not search you unless you give them plenty of reason to do so.
And whatever you do, DO NOT try and take anything in or our of the Netherlands. Import/Export is treated very harshly and all transport in and out of the country is targeted because of their drug tourism reputation. almost 9 years ago
Yeah the "Coffee Shops" are a must go. Try the "Space Cakes" and wash it down with a chocolate milkshake and you will be in heaven!
There are some pubs where the bottom level is only joints, the 2 level is alcohol and joints and the top level is a restaurant. From just walking in to the place you will get high.
Just remember not to take anything out of the country.
"What you do in Amsterdam, stays in Amsterdam" is a good way to put it. Just be careful of what you do and do not buy anything off anyone in the streets there are undercover police working the streets.
Enjoy - it is a excellent eye opener that's for sure! over 8 years ago
I lived there for 6 months and its legal depending on where you smoke it. Actually, what is legal there is cannabis and 'natural' drugs aka stuff you can find at 'smart shops' like mushrooms.
For example, you're only supposed to smoke at coffee shops that sell the cannabis, your home and at some specific spots that have a sticker on the window that say it is allowed. On the other side, if you decide you wanna smoke a joint in the streets and you get caught by a cop (and they are everywhere, specially at the red light district) you are pretty much screwed and be prepared to pay at least 60 euro for that.
Now, anything else is illegal and strictly forbidden, for example X or coke or all that stuff. You can totally find this stuff sold on the streets (like in pretty much any city in the world) but you can get in huge trouble if you get caught specially if you're a tourist. Some of my dutch friends said that sometimes cops go undercover and try to sell you these stuff and if you fall for it you're done. They don't like hooligans going around breaking the rules at all. over 8 years agoAnswered by Mafer Kendel via Travellr.com
